bled to nova gorica train
After day of enjoying the sights of Lake Bled we took the wonderful scenic train to Nova Gorica, or should I say Gorizia? It is a unique city where one half is in Slovenia and the other in Italy. Trg Evrope (Europe Square) is a square outside the station were the two countries meet. You can literally stand with one foot in Slovenia and the other one in Italy. The train passes through a beautiful landscape, crisscrossing the Soča River, and on the way you get a glimpse into a more traditional way of life, where every garden is filled with vegetables and fruit trees. On the way Helen spotted a guy cutting grass with a scythe, unusual yes, even more unusual was he was naked!
Once in Nova Gorica we headed to Trg Evrope which is literally a few steps from the station, there we took the obligatory photos of us straddling the border then took a break at the cafe attached to the station. We had plans to visit Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bohinj in the afternoon, so waited for the return train back to Lake Bled. This is an easy trip to arrange by yourselves. The train departs Bled Jezero which is easily accessible by walking the 1.5kms of the northern trail along the shores of the Lake Bled, alternatively you can park your car or take a taxi. The train leaves every couple of hours and takes around 1hr 40mins, returning again every two hours, costing €6.90 each way. You can either just turn up at the station (don’t worry the ticket office opens just before the train arrives) or you can book via potniski.sz.si
